NCRB report: Tamil Nadu second in road accident deaths
Chennai: The latest annual crime data, "Crime in India-2017", released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), has revealed that TN ranks second in the number of road accident deaths in 2017 .
Tamil Nadu has ranked number two in the terms of road accident deaths due to negligence, with Uttar Pradesh ranking number one with 17,701 deaths. Tamil Nadu has seen 16,661 deaths in 2017.
According to the NCRB data released on Monday, Delhi stood first with 1,451 victims in 1,317 accidents caused due to negligence, Chennai was in second place with 1,404 victims in 1,312 road accidents. Of these, 176 were hit-and-run cases and the vehicles that caused the accidents could not be traced. The city also ranked second in rash driving on a public way, with 6,204 cases and 7,420victims. Of these, 4,295 persons sustained grievous injuries in 3,578 cases, and this is the highest among cities. Besides, 2,609 persons also got hurt in 2,163 incidents of reckless driving.
In just January this year, 993 persons died in 5,173 road accidents. And over 70% reportedly happened on state and national highways. The condition of these roads and the lack of safety features have been blamed for a large number of accidents in the state. Police sources, however, allege that the main cause for deaths is due to rampant violation of traffic rules by the public. This includes over-speeding, disobeying traffic signals and refusal to wear helmets.
Crime against the elderly:
The state of Tamil Nadu has topped the country in reporting grave crimes, particularly murder, against senior citizens. The state stood second after Maharashtra in reporting incidents of robbery and snatching targeting elders.
The statistics released by NCRB revealed that 188 senior citizens were murdered in Tamil Nadu, followed by 152 in Maharashtra and 127 in Uttar Pradesh. As many as 62 senior citizens were victims of attempt-to-murder cases in Tamil Nadu, which is the second-highest in the country after Maharashtra that reported 66 such cases.
Foreign nationals booked for assault highest in TN :
Tamil Nadu had the most number of foreign nationals involved in crimes, especially those of assault, theft and attempt to murder, in 2017. Six foreign
nationals were involved in assault cases in the state, followed by two in Karnataka. Goa and Maharastra police had booked one foreign national for assault.
While three foreigners were booked for attempt to murder in Karnataka, two cases each were booked in Tamil Nadu and Maharastra under Section 307 of the IPC. Tamil Nadu police have registered five theft cases against foreign nationals, followed by Mizoram and Maharastra, three cases.
