14 of a family kill pregnant woman at Abdullapurmet

Woman married her neighbour 4 years ago.

Hyderabad: A woman who was seven months pregnant was killed by 14 of her family members, including her parents and brothers at Abdullapurmet, in an alleged incident of honour killing on Thursday.

She was strangled and later her throat was slit by her parents, the police said. Yellanki Vijaya Lakshmi, 27, daughter of Narasimha and Vanamma, of SC Colony in Abdullapurmet had married her neighbour B. Suresh, about four years ago.

They were in a relationship for four years and got married in January 2014. Her parents did not accept the marriage. There were heated arguments between the families of Suresh and Narasimha regarding the marriage, since their houses were located adjacent to each other.

A few days later, the couple left for Bhadrachalam to avoid further problems and did not come back to Abdullapurmet for the last four years. Suresh worked as a mason while his wife was a homemaker. They had a child, Raghuram, about three years ago.

On Sunday, Suresh’s mother Sunkamma died in a road accident. The couple along with their son had to come to the village to attend the last rites. The rituals were completed on Wednesday.

Vijaya Lakshmi, according to Abdullapurmet Inspector M. Muni, was cleaning the trash outside her house when her parents and 12 others took her away and killed her. “They dragged the woman to a community hall located in the neighbourhood.

On hearing the loud noise, the public alerted the local police. Before our patrolling team rushed to the spot, Vijaya Lakshmi was dead. Her parents, two brothers, and nine others were present at the spot, which is hardly 50 metres away from her paternal home. A few of them held her limbs, and her father and mother strangulated her with her saree,” the inspector said.

The accused — Vijaya Lakshmi’s parents Narasimha and Vanamma, brothers Lava and Shiva, cousins Praveen and Shiva Shankar, uncles Mysaiah, Ganesh, Ashok and Yadagiri, and three aunts and her paternal grandmother have all been booked under Section 302 r/w 34 of the IPC, he said.
