Govt inaction leading to disappearance of lakes: Petitioner in Mamasanikunta case

Hyderabad: A petitioner, who approached the NGT (National Green Tribunal) over the alleged encroachment of Mamasanikunta lake, said that the failure of government agencies is resulting in the disappearance of waterbodies.

In a presentation, petitioner Dr Lubna Sarwat, detailed the topography of the lake located in Puppalaguda of Ranga Reddy district. She said that a 6.35-metre-wide culvert was also barricaded at the site by a realtor during an inspection conducted by the Telangana State Industrial Infrastructure Corporation in November 2019.

Sarwat also touched on the encroachment of Mekasanikunta and Balkapur nala, under survey numbers 285 and 286.

The NGT has directed the Ranga Reddy collector and the HMDA to file a comprehensive report on Mamasanikunta by August 17. The collector has been directed to submit his views on the Google Map produced by the petitioner showing the location and also the extent of the waterbody.
