Hyderabad: A rape victim who is speech impaired was allegedly beaten up by the state home staff. The caretaker of the home instructed the staff to punish her as they could not understand her gestures. However, officials from the women and child welfare department said the victim had quarrelled with another inmate.

The girl was agitated and the staff who could not understand her confined her to a room for two days. When she started creating a scene, she was beaten up severely, sources said.

According to officials, the girl from Medak has been at the home for two years and is acquainted with all the staff. She is said to have expressed a desire to go home and conveyed it to officials. She was told to wait for the court to clear her case. Officials said she was upset with this, and was “creating disturbance.”

This apparently irritated another 18-year-old girl who beat her. Ms P. Asritha, project director, women and child welfare, Hyderabad, said. She said CCTVs images were being checked. She said the girl would be shifted to a hospital for medical check up.
