Kerala: Fired Rubber Board staff attempt suicide

They were among the 41 employees who were given termination notices after the factory producing block rubber was closed down citing losses.

Kottayam: Four dismissed employees of the Model TSR factory at Mannanam office of the Rubber Board here threatened to commit suicide by jumping from the top of the building on Tuesday.

They were among the 41 employees who were given termination notices after the factory producing block rubber was closed down citing losses.

The employees, Deepu Cherian, K.K. Sajan, P.V. Vinodan and Dineshan, climbed atop the Rubber Board office demanding that they should be reinstated.

They, however, came down in the evening after the authorities agreed to withdraw the notices until the case in the labour court was settled.

The incident happened when the Congress activists were protesting in front of the office against the closure of the regional office of the board.

‘Centre is vengeful towards farmers’

BJP is vengeful towards farmers because the party has failed to make any political impact in the state, KPCC president M.M. Hassan alleged here on Tuesday. He was inaugurating the rubber board office blockade organised by Kottayam DCC in front of the board's head office. "Such vengeance is the identity of autocrats," he alleged, adding that the Central government was trying to lease out the country to corporate groups. "The rubber farmers are facing injustice since the government has stopped all welfare schemes that used to benefit them," he said. DCC president Joshy Philip presided over the function.
