40-year-old man booked for loan fraud by Medipally police

The total scam is estimated to be around Rs 10-15 crore including Rs 40 lakh of banks.

Hyderabad: A 40-year-old man, who posed as a businessman, was booked by Medipally police for duping villagers by promising them loans and for fooling bank officials by submitting fake documents and taking huge loans.

Police said, Soumen Banerjee, hailing from Kolkata, had cheated people in Chengicherla village with the false promise to provide 30 per cent interest per Rs 1 lakh and collected lakhs from 50 victims.

Based on a complaint received from his friend and associate, Akhil, a real estate agent, police booked a case against Banerjee.

“Banerjee was earlier arrested for fraud by Kushaiguda police in September 2016. Later, after a brawl with Akhil, he started duping the public,” said Sub Inspector Naveen Kumar of the Special Operation Team of Malkajgiri.

The total scam is estimated to be around Rs 10-15 crore including Rs 40 lakh of banks. Soumen Banerjee, his wife, Suparna Banerjee, 35, and son, Susovan Banerjee, 14, went absconding two days before the complaint was lodged with the Medipally police.

“He has about 20 plus bank accounts and uses fake credentials to apply for loans,” added the SI.

“Our special team is on the lookout for the accused in different states including Maharashtra and West Bengal,” said Mr Kumar.
