Lorry driver on phone mows down carpenter in Bengaluru

BENGALURU: The driver of a sand-laden lorry who was talking on his mobile phone mowed down a 28-year-old carpenter and injured a woman on MEA Road in Yeshawanthpura on Monday.

The deceased, Prakash, was a resident of Rajagopalnagar, while the injured, Akkayamma, is from RMC Yard. Prakash and Akkayamma were crossing the road when the lorry, which was parked, suddenly moved. The driver, who was on the seat, was talking on the phone when the accident occurred around 10.30 am, the police said. The vehicle ran over Prakash, while Akkayamma fell on the roadside.

Passersby rushed Prakash to KC General Hospital, where he died in the evening. Akkayamma was treated as an outpatient and given first-aid. Alert public caught the cleaner of the lorry, while the driver managed to escape, the police said.

A case of death due to negligence has been registered at the Yeshwanthpur traffic police station.

45-yr-old dragged for 50 metres
A 45-year-old supervisor in a factory was killed in a road accident on the elevated flyover at Dasarhalli in Peenya after he lost balance and was dragged of for over 50 metres on Monday.

The deceased, Sanjeev Joshi, was a resident of Annapurneshwarinagar in Nagarabhavi. He hailed from Vijayapura district and had moved to the city about 10 years ago. He was working as a supervisor at a factory in Nelamangala.

The accident occurred around 11 am when Joshi was on his way to office. The police suspect that an unknown vehicle dragged Joshi for about 50 metres after he lost his balance and fell from his bike. Passersby called up the police and informed them about the accident. They rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he died around 3 pm.
