Bengaluru: City Police Commissioner T. Suneel Kumar has suspended two cops, including a Sub-Inspector, of DJ Halli police station for brutally assaulting a 23-year-old youth who now is battling for his life.

The two policemen, Sub-Inspector Santosh and constable Ayappa, were suspended for mercilessly beating up Mohammed Tanveer, for allegedly arguing with Ayappa for using mobile phone while riding.

The suspension order was issued following a report filed by Deputy Commissioner (Northeast) Kala Krishnaswamy, after investigating the allegations.

The incident took place on the night of April 9 when Tanveer, resident of Rathan Singh Layout near Kaval Byrasandra, and his friend Danish were on their way to a medical shop to buy medicines for Tanveer's ailing father.

While Tanveer was riding the bike, he received a call from his mother asking him to buy more medicines. As he was talking over the phone, constable Ayyappa stopped him.

According to Danish, Tanveer requested the constable to fine him and leave as he needed to urgently buy medicine. Ayyappa took offence and assaulted him with a lathi and dragged him to the police car.

He took Tanveer to the police station where about eight policemen, including SI Santosh, assaulted him. According to Tanveer's brother Musawwir, Tanveer was beaten up from 1 am to 8 am. After torturing Tanveer for the whole day, the police released the duo.

While Tanveer was on bed for two days, unable to move, his mother noticed that his urine was red in colour. They rushed him to Bombay Clinic located near Kaval Byrasandra, when the doctors told them that his kidneys had been damaged.

Later he was shifted to another hospital for further treatment where test confirmed that Tanveer’s blood creatinine levels had increased drastically and he has been battling for his life since April 18. Doctors said that if his creatinine levels do not come down soon, he may not survive, his brother said. On Saturday, a complaint was lodged against the cops who had assaulted Tanveer to extreme brutality following which Addit—ional Commissioner of Police (East) Seemanth Kumar Singh visited the hospital and ordered a probe.

During investigation it was found that the cops had subjected him to torture.

DJ Halli police station has gained notoriety for police brutality and custodial torture. In July last year, a painter has complained to Police Commissioner about the torture he was subjected to at DJ Halli police station.
