Never comment on fake posts
Hyderabad: Though awareness about fake posts on social media is growing, the way people reacted to them needed transformation, according to experts.
Whenever a user realises that a post is fake, they often tend to comment on it by saying so. “Never acknowledge a fake post by commenting that it is fake, as the notification will go to your friends that you have commented on it. It will never show the content of your comment. Consequently, without reading your comments your friends tend to like it and eventually the fake post spreads across the platform,” said Cyber Crimes CID Additional SP U. Ram Mohan.
At a session on “Cyber Security Issues and Strategies” conducted by the Federation of TS and AP Chambers of Commerce and Industry on Friday, he said, “Either do not touch it or always report a fake post using the option provided in settings. When many people report it, platforms like Facebook will use their hashing mechanism to remove it.”
Experts felt people should understand the business models of social media platforms. People should protect themselves online, especially when sharing personal details, including location.
