17 year old rape victim of Chilkalguda ends life
Hyderabad: A rape victim, a 17-year-old Intermediate student, committed suicide by consuming her grandmother’s blood pressure tablets at her residence in Chilkalguda. The girl was raped by her former senior in college earlier this month, following which police booked the 21-year-old from Kukatpally and remanded him.
The incident was reported at Chilkalguda police station on March 12. “The boy, identified as Mohd Aslam of Kukatpally, was an ex-student of her college and discontinued studies after his Intermediate. He and the victim were acquaintances in college as he was her senior,” the official said.
The boy lured her under the pretext of love and used to call her several times at his residence in Manike-shwar Nagar in Osmania University area and sexually assault her.
“He would only talk to her and call her during their meetings and never answered her phone calls otherwise. On March 12, the girl came forward with her parents and lodged a complaint with us, following which we booked him remanded him to judicial custody,” the official added.
On Thursday night, depressed over the incident and unable to face people, the girl took her grandmother’s tablets and consumed a heavy dose. She fell unconscious and family members rushed her to hospital, where she died on Friday morning.
About such victims, post the traumatic incident, consulting psychiatrist Dr Purnima Nagaraja said, “Though sexual abuse is a traumatic and life-altering experience, a recovery is possible. A compassionate therapist who understands trauma, especially sexual trauma and its effects, will often be able to help those who have experienced rape and other forms of sexual abuse.”
