Woman nabbed from Bengaluru for duping men on matrimonial site

Hyderabad: Cyber crime police arrested a woman on Wednesday at Bengaluru for cheating people on online matrimonial sites and extracting money from them citing false emergencies.

The accused, Y. Sushmitha, had uploaded details on Bharatmatrimony.com, with a fake picture. She used this as a bait to trap men looking for a match.

A complaint was filed against Sushmita on March 6 by a man in who said that he took membership on the website on November 28, 2016 and that he saw Sushmita’s profile and exchanged details.

He said they started communications from January 22, 2017. The parents of both parties communicated for a week, and after that they agreed on marriage and decided to meet on February 6, 2017.

Meanwhile, the complainant got a call from Sushmita and she told him that she had lost her wallet, credit cards, debit cards and passport and Rs 40,000. She asked the victim for help and promised that she will return the money when they meet.

He obliged and gave her Rs 1,66,500 through online transfer from January 24 till February 2. The girl and her family stopped all communications the next day. They did not show up to meet and all attempts made by the victim to reach her went in vain.

The matrimonial site asked the victim to file a complaint with the police and it was revealed during investigation that the accused had trapped two more individuals, one of whom had transferred Rs 2,78,000.

The cyber crime team visited Bengaluru and arrested Sushmitha on Wednesday. She was remanded to custody.
