Hyderabad: Seven lorry drivers who were caught driving drunk were sent to jail for 20 days. They was arrested during a special drive conducted by the Hyderabad traffic police on Saturday. The drive covered drivers of school and college buses and heavy vehicles.
The police produced 38 violators in the metropolitan magistrate court. Apart from the seven lorry drivers jailed for 20 days, 12 others were jailed for 15 days, eight for 10 days and 12 drivers were jailed for less then 10 days. Fines between Rs 1,000 and Rs 3,000 were imposed on all drivers.
Additional commissioner of police, traffic, Jitender said, lorry and truck drivers deserved higher punishment as they posed a bigger risk on the roads. “We will ensure stringent punishment for drivers of heavy vehicles,” he said.
