Visakhapatnam: First additional district court judge K Sudharani sentenced a man and his mother to seven years’ imprisonment in a dowry harassment and death case, here on Wednesday.
According to the prosecution, Pentapati Chandrasekhar and his mother P Indravathi were found guilty of harassing P Ramanamma, following which she ended her life in December 2016.
The Vizianagaram police said Chandrasekhar, a resident of YSR Nagar, married Ramanamma, a native of Pudimadaka under Atchutapuram Mandal in Vizag district in February 2016.
As per the case, Chandrasekhar and his mother physically and mentally harassed Ramanamma for additional dowry and later drove the woman to her parents’ house. Ramanamma set herself on fire on December 22, 2016. Though she was admitted to a hospital, her life could not be saved.
Based on the dying declaration of the victim, the then sub-inspector of Two-Town police station, Ravi, registered a case against Chandrasekhar and his mother. The police filed the charge-sheet saying Ramanamma ended her life as she was unable to bear the harassment after her marriage.
Judge Sudharani sentenced both Chandrasekhar and Indravathi to seven years’ rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 60,000 each.
