Hyderabad: 5-year-old beaten by principal, suffers severe injury

Chaitanyapuri police registered a case against principal Prema Chaudhury on Thursday.

Hyderabad: A five-year-old student of Marie Pia’s Good Shepherd High School in Nagole was allegedly beaten by the school’s principal when he did not look at the blackboard in class, while she was teaching numbers.

The boy suffered a severe injury to his right cheek and ear. Chaitanyapuri police registered a case against principal Prema Chaudhury on Thursday. Aele Nagendra Kumar complained to his mother, Ms Kavitha, of pain in his right ear and cheek when she picked him up from school on Wednesday. She found marks on his cheeks and ears and informed her husband, marketing executive A. Ramu,

School gives various versions
On Thursday, the family went to the school to inquire but were given multiple answers. “Initially they said that he was injured while playing. Later they said something else. When we met the principal, she said she beat the boy as he was not concentrating on the blackboard,” the kid’s father A. Ramu claimed.

He said that the principal said the boy had fallen while playing. But on persistent questioning, she said she had twisted the boy's ears, and apologised to the parents.

Ms Kavitha lodged a complaint with the police who filed a case for voluntarily causing hurt (IPC Section 323) and cruelty to child (Section 75 of Juvenile Justice act) and sent the boy for a medical tests.

The principal said: “I was on rounds and found the boy looking at his books instead of the blackboard and twisted his ear, but I did not beat him,” she said.

Balala Hakkula Sangham termed it cruel and blamed the education department for being ‘irresponsible’ while dealing with corporal punishment.
