Special prosecutor for Koliyoor murder case

The charge sheet was filed at a local court in Neyyatinkara.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Senior lawyer V.S. Vineeth Kumar has been appointed as the special public prosecutor in the Koliyoor murder case. Various sections of the IPC including murder and rape have been invoked against the two accused in the charge sheet filed recently by the city police which probed the case. According to police sources, the government recently issued orders appointing Mr. Vineeth Kumar as special prosecutor following a recommendation by the police.

Mr. Vineeth Kumar was special prosecutor in the Attingal twin murder case, Varkala Salim murder case and Arihara Varma murder case. In all cases, the accused were convicted. Mariyadas, 45, of Koliyoor was murdered and his wife was brutally attacked during the intervening night of July 6 and 7 this year at their residence in Koliyoor under the Kovalam police station limits. Mariyadas’s wife is yet to recover from the attack and is still in a vegetative state, police sources said.

The accused in the case are Anilkumar alias Kolusu Binu, 38, and Chandrasekharan alias Chandran, 39. The charges against the accused are IPC 302 for murder, 307 for attempt to murder, 376A for rape, 499 for house trespass, 397 for robbery and 34 for act committed with common intention. Anilkumar who earlier lived in Koliyoor had even worked with Mariyadas as a collection agent in his chit business. Mariyadas later broke his ties with Anilkumar because of the latter’s involvement in unlawful acts and misbehavior.

Revenge was the motive for the murder and other criminal acts, police said. Earlier, the accused had confessed that they broke into the house intending to steal money and ornaments but had bludgeoned Maryadas and his wife as they woke up. The investigation team had collected over 50 material objects and listed over 100 witnesses against the accused. The charge sheet was filed at a local court in Neyyatinkara. The case has been shifted to the second additional sessions court here and the trial will begin soon.
