Chittoor police arrest inter-state gold robbers

Gang stole 38 gold packets from Kirtana Finance in car break-in at Sindhu Towers Hotel

Tirupati: Chittoor police have arrested two members of an inter-state gang of robbers who targeted gold shops, banks, busy commercial areas, finance companies and parking lots.

Addressing media persons on Wednesday, Chittoor superintendent of police (SP) Y. Rishanth Reddy said in the first week of November, the gang had smashed the window of a car parked in front of Sindhu Towers Hotel within the limits of Chittoor One Town police station and stole 38 packets of gold jewellery belonging to Kirtana Finance Company.

Following a complaint, district police formed three special teams led by inspector S. Viswanath Reddy, two sub-inspectors S. Mallikarjuna and B. Bharti, and others. After investigations across Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, police zeroed in on an inter-state gang from West Bengal’s Kharagpur, operating out of Tiruchirappalli in TN.

Police have arrested G. Harish (24) from Srirangam and R. Jamuna (50) from Medinipur, West Bengal.

“This particular gang conducted recce of potential targets, such as gold shops, banks, busy commercial areas, finance companies and parking lots. Gang members would work in teams creating distractions, stealing bags or smashing car windows to pick up valuables,” SP Rishanth Reddy said.

Police have recovered 440 grams of stolen gold jewellery worth ₹17 lakh from the arrested duo. Efforts are underway to nab the remaining gang members.
