Moral policing: 7 taken into custody
Mangaluru: Seven people were taken into custody for their alleged involvement in moral policing at Puttur on Wednesday.
The incident took place in the afternoon at Renja rickshaw stand when a group of five boys and five girls were on their way to attend Bakrid celebration at their friend's house.
Police said the group had come from Mangaluru to attend Bakrid celebration at the house of their classmate in Nidpalli.
They got down at Renja and wanted to take a rickshaw to Nidpalli. A rickshaw driver is said to have questioned the group and objected to Muslim boys accompanying Hindu girls.
After getting an alert the police immediately rushed to the spot and took Rukma, Sathish, Sheshappa, Ganesh, Kunji, Duggappa and Purushottam into custody for assaulting a boy and trying to create hatred among two communities.
Puttur rural police have filed a suo motu case under sections IPC 143, 147, 341, 504, 323, 153(A) and 149.
The student later went to their friend's house and attended the celebration.
Police said the Hindu leaders of the village have condemned the vigilante attack and extended support to the police.
