Bengaluru: 7 students in custody for ragging

The seven seniors threatened the two not to discuss the ragging incident with anyone before letting them off.

Bengaluru: The Bommanahalli police arrested seven engineering students for allegedly ragging their juniors. The juniors who recently started attending college and staying in hostel complained to their warden that seniors were telling them to dance and clean their rooms.

The accused have been identified as Ajay Tom, Amal A, Sahir, Mohammed Fadal, Mohammed Najik, Najeef, and Amal Benny, who stay at Mangammanapalya near their college.

The victims, two freshers, Adarsha and Vishal, joined the D. Pharma course at Oxford Educational Institution at Bommanahalli about 10 days ago. The two were staying in the college hostel and the incident came to light on August 17, 2018 when the warden, Gurumurthy T.M., noticed that the two had not returned even after 8.30 pm and started searching for them. Around 3 am, they returned to the hostel and the warden learnt that the seniors had called them over the phone to go to their house where they ragged them. The seniors told them to sing and dance after which they were asked to clean their house. The seven seniors threatened the two not to discuss the ragging incident with anyone before letting them off.

The warden immediately informed the principal of the college and later filed a complaint with the Bommanahalli police.

The police said that the seven were booked under Section 116 of the Karnataka Education Act 1983 and under several IPC sections including abduction, wrongful confinement and criminal intimidation.

The Bommanahalli police produced them before the court and they were remanded to judicial custody.
