Chennai: Man arrested for beating woman

The locals alerted the police who came to the spot and rescued the woman.

Chennai: A 60-year-old man who reportedly tied and beat up a 45-year-old woman in Vilangattur in Cuddalore district was arrested by the police after a protest by a women’s organisation. Sources said the man was arrested on the same day but was shortly released on bail, citing old age.

According to reports, the accused Kolanji's daughter Pavali and the victim's son Periyaswamy had been in a relationship but the latter's family did not approve of the relationship. As they were arranging to fix her marriage with another man, Periyaswamy and Pavali eloped. A week after the incident, on Thursday, Kolanji asked Periyaswamy's mother Selvi about their whereabouts. When she said he had no clue, the 60-year-old man reportedly tied her to an electric pole and beat her up. Sources said the man even cut the victim's hair.

The locals alerted the police who came to the spot and rescued the woman. They also arrested the man. However, on the same day, the man was released on bail, citing old age.

The woman admitted herself to the Virudhachalam government hospital, However, the doctors on Thursday discharged her without providing treatment. Following which cadres of All India Democratic Women's Association on Thursday staged a protest outside the Virudhachalam hospital to give the woman proper treatment and demanded arrest of the accused. The protesters said that the accused was strong enough to tie and beat the woman ruthlessly and it is unfair that the police released him citing his old age.

The man was arrested after the protest and the woman was re-admitted at the hospital, sources said.
