6 ‘fake police’ held for robbery in Coimbatore

Based on a tip-off, a team led by assistant commissioner Soma Sekar arrested a six-member gang from Madhukkarai on Monday.

COIMBATORE: A Special team police have cracked the Rs 13 lakh robbery case with the arrest of six ‘fake policemen’ here. According to police, Naushad, a native of Thalacherry in Kerala came down to Coimbatore on July 17 along with his friend Abinesh to purchase jewels. While they were nearing Sivananda Colony, a five-member gang in two cars blocked Naushad’s car. They claimed to be Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) staff and took away Rs 13 lakh cash with them, asking Naushad to produce proper accounts at nearby police station and take back cash.

A suspicious Naushad lodged a complaint at Rathinapuri police station police officials after verifying the incident with DVAC staff, who confirmed it to be a robbery. On suspicion, police took Naushad’s associate Abinesh into custody and he confessed to planning the robbery.

They were identified as Siva, 39, from Palakkad, Ajith, 26, Aravindhan, 42, from Thrissur, Padmanaban, 50, from Coimbatore-Rathinapuri, Kamalesh, 42, from KK Pudhur and 63-year-old Natarajan from Thudiyaloor. Police seized Rs 40,000, besides two cars used for the crime along with a few cell phones from the gang. Police have also launched a search for 3 more of the gang on run.
