Kerala: Girl victim of petrol attack succumbs

The girl who sustained 80 per cent burns was brought there in a critical condition.

Kottayam: The girl who sustained serious burns in a petrol attack by a youth at Kadammanitta, Pathanamthitta, on July 15 died at the Ganga Hospital, Coimbatore, on Saturday morning. Sari, 17, of Kureethekkee Colony near Naranganam, who was undergoing treatment at the medical college hospital here, was airlifted in a helicopter.

A Chennai-based NGO 'Prevention of violence and crime against women' came forward to take care of the treatment of Sari and airlifted her on Thursday. The NGO takes up the cases of burn victims. Dr S. Raja Sabhapathy, medical director of the Ganga Hospital, and head of the department of plastic surgery, told DC that the girl who sustained 80 per cent burns was brought there in a critical condition.

“We hoped to graft her skin since we have a skin bank. We were trying for a major procedure. However, her condition worsened and we could not do anything,” he said.

A police team from Pathanamthitta reached Coimbatore on Saturday evening and conducted the inquest. The youth Sajil, 24, of Kadamanitta, a grass cutter, who sustained 40 per cent burns is undergoing treatment at the Kottayam MCH. They were in a relationship and he poured petrol over her and set her ablaze when she refused to go along with him while she was in the house of her relative. He also suffered burns as he tried to commit suicide. He was absconding after the incident and the police arrested him two days later.
