Hyderabad: A city orphanage made children clean a drainage tank and do household chores. Seeing this, the public approached the police.

The Agape Orphanage in Swaroop Nagar made children clean drainage tanks on Saturday. Based on a complaint filed by a local named Aravind, Uppal police registered a case against orphanage warden Prajapathi and supervisor, Ilavarasan and apprehended them.

“He used the children for his daily chores and made them clean the drainage,” said Inspector Y. Narasimha Reddy of Uppal police station. The public approached the NGO, Balala Hakkula Sangham for help, and they took up the matter with the police commissioner of Rachakonda, Mr Mahesh Bhagawat.

“The orphanage has around 60 children. The managers of this orphanage, Len, David, Ivarsan, Prajapati, Rama Rao and Naveen made the children aged between 8 and 14 to clean the drainage on Saturday afternoon,” said the hon. president of the NGO, Achyuta Rao.

The NGO demanded an enquiry into the functioning of orphanages in and around Hyderabad and the violation of child rights in them.
