Chennai: Woman teacher jailed for sexual abuse of students

Chennai: A woman teacher has been jailed after being charged with sexually abusing her school students at Arani in Tiruvannamalai district. Her arrest followed complaint lodged by none other than her husband before the district collector saying the police were refusing to accept his petition and that his wife has been a repeat offender despite being transferred out from various schools for her perverse criminal conduct.

U. Nithya (30), a teacher of English at the Paiyur government high school, had allegedly abused her students at school or during her visits to their houses for tuition classes. She would even capture the intimate scenes on her mobile phone, her husband Umesh Kumar, also a government school teacher, told the district collector in his complaint made in December last year.

Kumar had found intimate pictures and porn visuals of the students on her phone and confronted her. When she continued to indulge in such misconduct, the two had arguments and she moved out to live separately. Meanwhile, some of
the schools where she had worked over the last few years transferred her out after her bad conduct became known.

Following a directive from the collector, the district social welfare department conducted an inquiry and found the complaint to be true. The district child protection unit lodged complaint with the police and a case was registered against the women teacher under Sections 10 (aggravated sexual assault) and 14 (punishment for using child for pornographic purposes) of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act.

Police said preliminary investigation showed that the woman had sexually abused some students in the age group of 15-17 and even captured those images on her phone for sharing online. “So far, we have
evidence of her abusing two boys”, said an officer, adding that the teacher would go to the houses of the students for taking tuition classes and lure them into intimate relationship.

Sadly, though the husband had approached various police stations complaining of his wife’s conduct, no action was taken. And schools too failed to take firm action against her, choosing to merely transfer her out.

District Primary Education Officer V Jayakumar has now removed Nithya from her posting. She has been remanded to custody by the Fast Track Mahila

Court at Tiruvannamalai court and ordered to be kept in remand until April 4 until investigations are completed.
