Telangana: School heads held for locking kids up
Hyderabad: Hayathnagar police has arrested the principal and an assistant director of the Saritha Vidya Niketan School which had, on March 18, locked up students who had fee dues. Parents had filed a police complaint against the school’s management accusing the principal, Rajani Prabha, and one Basheer Ali of harassment.
Over 19 students, including two children from Class 1, were locked inside a classroom for over an hour after the school accused their parents of not paying the school fees on time. The children were told by the teachers that they would not be allowed to write an ongoing exam until the dues were cleared. The incident had caused outrage in the city. Earlier on March 18, hours before the locking up, police officials had visited the school following an alert from parents. With the arrival of the police, the management relented and agreed to allow the children to write the exam. But once the officials left, at around 4 pm, the teachers took the kids to the school’s recreation room and locked them up inside. Following a complaint from parents, cops booked a case under IPC Section 342 (wrongful confinement) against the two officials.
