Bengaluru: 10-year-old case returns to haunt complainant cop

The four assailants had on February 17 attacked the CAR policeman, Purushotham, and taken away his revolver.

Bengaluru: In a dramatic turn of events, a policeman attached to city armed reserve (CAR), who had complained of assault by four youths, was arrested on Wednesday after a service gun of his colleague, which went missing a decade ago, was found at his house.

The four assailants had on February 17 attacked the CAR policeman, Purushotham, and taken away his revolver. Purushotham was assaulted after he allegedly questioned them for urinating on the compound wall of a temple located near Vinayaka theatre on Mysuru Road.

The Cottonpet police had registered a case and Purushotham was treated at the Victoria Hospital. Though the police had earlier denied that Purushotham’s service gun was stolen by the assailants, later they conceded that the robbery did happen.

The CAR policeman has earlier served as ‘gunman’ to several elite politicians and even higher police officials. According to the police, the service pistol found at his residence had reportedly gone missing in 2006 and it belonged to one of his colleagues Dasharath. They both were posted in quick action force as part of the ‘Raj Bhavan’ security arrangements.
After his pistol went missing, Dasharath was suspended from service. It is learnt that Dasharath and his family members faced a lot of humiliation. This new finding has reopened a decade-old case.

The trigger-happy cop!
The arrest is expected to bring out more skeletons from Purushotham’s past. According to department sources he was once deputed to look after the dogs at the residence of a former police commissioner. He had the habit of frightening other police officers with his service gun whenever they came to visit the commissioner.

He had the habit of showing off his service gun. In 2003, he had allegedly shot at a man, who was attempting to rob at a DIG’s house.
