Kunnicode: Blogger alleges custodial torture

Pradeep Peter of Vilakudy in Kunnicode suffered from prolonged physical illness after the assault on October 27.

Kollam: A blogger from Kunnicode here has moved the state human rights commission accusing the police of violating his human rights after taking him into custody in a minor case. He claims cops assaulted him until he turned unconscious and asked his parents to take him to the mental hospital saying he was “mentally unwell”. Pradeep Peter of Vilakudy in Kunnicode suffered from prolonged physical illness after the assault on October 27. The Kunnicode police asked him to be present at the station based on a complaint filed by his father following a “petty domestic dispute”.

“The sub-inspector shouted at me abusive words. When I asked permission to let me explain my part, they assaulted me. There were about 15 officers who brutally beat me up for about 10 minutes. They also threatened to kill me,” Mr Peter said. “I was set free after spending two weeks in a mental hospital as doctors realised I had no mental issues.” He says the police acted at the instance of his uncle, a politician. The sub-inspector, Bipin Prakash, said he had undergone treatment for mental illness for nearly 12 years and behaved like the psychopath who murdered his parents in Thiruvananthapuram.

“He was so aggressive in their house that it was the parents who requested us to take him," he told DC. "He's also a drug addict. In custody, he became frantic and attacked the policemen. It was his father who took him to the mental hospital in Oolampara.” Mr Peter, who denies it, filed a petition with the chief minister and police complaints authority as well.
