Hyderabad: The SHE teams of Rachakonda and two women and child counselling centres did play a major role in improving safety of the women and also solving major cases. Sources pointed to the arrest of an octogenarian, N. Satyanarayana Rao, who had been sexually harassing minors for a long time by luring them with chocolates and money. The team also helped in the recent arrest of a stalker filming women passengers on metro trains. The counselling centres settled cases of 401 couples.
Data showed that SHE teams booked 209 cases under IPC, 322 petty and 555 majors cases and arrest of 26 minors in 2017. Besides, a new initiative ‘SHE FOR HER’ was launched to create safe environment for girl students inside colleges.
“Students were not willing to come forward when subjected to eve teasing. To bridge this police-student gap, the new initiative was conceived where two senior girls from each college were trained on the laws and would help other students,” said Commissioner Mahesh Bhagwat.
Through this initiative, 14 cases were boo-ked and 15 eve teasers were arrested.
The two counselling centres at Kushaiguda and Saroornagar were engaged in efforts to prevent crime against women and children. Of the 813 cases related to disputes among couples which included violence against women as a result of alcohol addiction and extra marital affairs, 401 cases were compromised and others were in courts.
“Majority of the cases of violence against women is due to alcohol addiction, followed by dowry harassment involving in-laws and harassment due to extramarital affairs. Professional counsellors are attend to victims and help them out,” he added.
