West Bengal: Housewife's body found, mother-in-law 'beaten to death'
Sagar: A housewife was found hanging from the ceiling at her in-law's home, with her mother-in-law dragged by a mob and later found dead in an apparent retaliatory action in different parts of Sagar area of South 24 Parganas district.
Police said the blood-smeared body of elderly Laxmi Naia was found in Nagendraganj hamlet of Sagar today after she was dragged from her home at Sridham locality area, in other part of the islands, by the neighbours and family friends of Laxmi's daughter-in-law Sampa Naia (35) whose hanging body with injury marks was found at her in-law's place on Wednesday night.
The mob, consisting family, friends and neighbours, from Nagendraganj area arrived early Thursday morning at Shampa's in-law's house on hearing about the death and alleged she was beaten to murder by her husband and mother-in-law for dowry and not finding her husband, took away the mother-in-law, locals told the police.
Sukhdeb, husband of the deceased, was absconding and later arrested from a hideout in Sagar on yesterday night, police said adding he was a day labourer.
No arrests have been made in connection with the death of Laxmi. The couple had been married for 10 years.
