CCTV cameras clear doctor in road mishap in Hyderabad

Victim had jumped in front of his car and killed himself.

Hyderabad: Dr Ahmed Abdul Bari, 26, considers it a miracle that the police managed to recover CCTV footage of an accident on September 14, in which he was the accused.

The camera was installed recently as part of a community policing project. The footage showed the victim had jumped in front of the car Dr Ahmed was driving. He was booked for causing death through negligent driving.

Dr Ahmed, who recently completed MBBS, was preparing to go abroad for post graduate studies. He is happy that the case against him will be closed now.

On September 14, Dr Ahmed Abdul Bari, a resident of Darushifa, was returning home from a medical college in Vikarabad. After crossing Langar Houz flyover, his car hit a pedestrian. Dr Ahmed and locals shifted the victim to a nearby hospital, where he died. A case was registered against Dr Ahmed.

On Wednesday, police recovered CCTV footage. It showed the victim — yet to be identified — arguing with passersby. After crossing the road, he waited for some time and then jumped in front of Dr Ahmed’s car.

“I was terrified. Many times I had treated accident victims in hospital. But this was a shock for me. A person lying under my vehicle fighting for life affected me deeply,” Dr Ahmed said. He rushed the victim to a nearby hospital in his own vehicle with the help of locals, but the victim died hours later.

Police say that the CCTV footage will be strong evidence in the case. “We are checking the footage. Based on evidence we will proceed. The victim has a tattoo on his right hand written Harikrishna. He is yet to be identified,” Langar Houz inspector Md Javeed said, adding that the cameras which were a long pending plan, became a reality with the support of residents. The cameras were installed just five days before the incident on September 9.

In March 2016, 47-year-old B. Bhupathi Rao, jumped in front of a truck near ECIL junction. The truck driver was booked for causing death but later the CCTV footage recovered from a camera showed that Bhupathi Rao had jumped in front of the vehicle and had committed suicide.

The case was later altered to suicidal death and closed.
