Kollam: Youth attacked by goons dies

Kollam: A 20-year-old youth who fell prey to a gang attack in a case of mistaken identity succumbed to injuries after battling for life for a week at the Thiruvananthapuram MCH on Sunday.

Sumesh of Sudhin Bhavan at Mundakkal here was riding a motorcycle along Thanni here had suffered grave injuries in abdomen and limbs in the attack with iron rods all over his body except head as he was wearing a helmet.

He fell on the ground in the attack that took place on August 9 and the assailants fled the scene as the public gathered.

He was at first admitted to a hospital in Kollam where he underwent two surgeries. He was later taken to the MCH for expert medical care but breathed his last on Sunday morning.

Eravipuram police, who had remanded six persons Miraz, Shamnad, Mohammed Shahid, Ajmal, Aby and Altaf, said the incident was an offshoot of rivalry between gangs from Thanni and Valathungal.

“A gang from Thanni had gone to Valathungal in an apparent show-off aiming at another gang in Valathungal. In retaliation, they visited Thanni and the murder took place on their return,” SI Mohammed Shafi told DC.

“They saw Sumesh riding his motorcycle in a secluded area and unleashed the attack mistaking him for a member of the gang from Thanni.”

Police registered a case against the culprits on charges of murder, and the body was released to relatives after an autopsy.
