Hyderabad: Women face more cyber crimes

Character assasination using social media most common.

Hyderabad: Cybercrime stations receive more complaints from women than men.

Hyderabad and Cyberabad police have recorded a steep increase in the number of cases of cyber stalking, abusive e-mails, SMS and phone calls, and Facebook related crimes this year, and a large number of victims have been young women.

Police says that in a majority of the cases, the offenders were ex-boyfriends or acquaintances.

According to cybercrime officials, at least three complaints are lodged per week by women at cybercrime police stations.

Most of the complaints are about character assassination of women on Facebook.

“The offender opens a Facebook account using a photograph and details of the woman victim. Then he uploads obscene content and forwards it to the relatives and friends of he victim to defame her. This is the usual crime against women in cyber world,” said Mr Md.

Riyazuddin, Cyber Crime inspector from Cyberabad.

“In many cases, ex-boyfriends of the victims have also uploaded their intimate photographs on Facebook in order to defame the victims,” he added. Some of the offenders also included the mobile phone number of the victim on Facebook, mentioning them as call girls.

Officials say that among the arrested men in these cases, there are ex-boyfriends, relatives, neighbours, and acquaintances.

“Over 70 per cent of the suspects are known to the victims. In a few cases, even ex-husbands were arrested,” said Mr Riyazuddin.

The arrested falsely believed they could get away with the offence due to the anonymity that cyber world offers.
