Infant found abandoned in suburban train

A one-month-old boy baby was found abandoned in a ladies compartment of an EMU at Tambaram railway station.

Chennai: A one-month-old boy baby was found abandoned in a ladies compartment of an EMU at Tambaram railway station on Wednesday night by an RPF team. The healthy boy was found wrapped in a towel, with a milk bottle placed nearby, under a seat in the Chengalpet - Beach electric train reaching Tambaram around 11.20 pm. RPF personnel happened to look inside the compartment when they heard cries of a baby from inside the near empty coach.

“There were four women travelling in the compartment and they too were clueless about the parents of the baby. So the RPF men took the baby from the train,” railway sources said. This is the sixth case of an infant being found abandoned in Kancheepuram revenue district this year, compared to eight cases last year. The baby was immediately taken to Chromepet GH in a 108 ambulance and later handed over to the Kancheepuram child line coordinator, R Gavaskar, who admitted the boy in Chengalpet medical college for further observation.

The Tambaram railway police registered a case on the incident. Police are making enquiries to know if anybody had seen the baby being carried by a woman into the ladies' compartment from any railway station between Chengalpet and Tambaram on Wednesday night. The police revealed they do not have any CCTV footage on the incident.
