Kerala: No action against Facebook child abuse
Thiruvananthapuram: The Cyber Police and Cyberdome are lax in responding to complaints about paedophilia, it appears. Mr Jaljith Thottoli, an activist, who complained to the agencies on May 18 about a Facebook page with paedophilic content, has not received any response so far. He says that like the Edappal theatre molestation case, this is yet another example of police ignoring complaints of child abuse. “They have not even sent an acknowledgement about the mail, which should have been given top priority. It is distressing that the police are ignoring cases of child abuse,” he says.
The activist has helped expose other paedophilic pages on social media, including a paedophilic clique which operated via Telegraph, a social networking app similar to WhatsApp. But earlier when he complained, the police used to respond the next day, says Thottoli. Cyber Police sources told DC that they had not received any mail from Thottoli recently. “The last mail we received from him was on November 28, 2017. We have not received any other mail,” an official said. However, DC had also received the mail proving that it was sent to the agency.
Cyberdome operations officer S.P. Prakash, sub-inspector, told DC, “we don’t directly investigate such cases. Normally, we forward the complaint to the nodal officer of Cyber Cell. The investigation is then pursued by the cell in the area from which the complaint was filed by the petitioner,” he said. However, the nodal officer of Cyber Cell, IG Manoj Abraham, said that cyber police receives hundreds of mails and that it would be difficult for him to respond to each.
