Hyderabad Gems SEZ staff threatens suicide
Hyderabad: The protest outside the Hyderabad Gems SEZ premises continued for the second day, with workers threatening to commit suicide unless assured of job security. The workers are still clueless about the status of their employment.
The Enforcement Directorate has sealed the SEZ premises, but it is for the SEZ’s management to inform workers regarding the layoffs.
“900 workers, including those who are physically handicapped, have been left jobless. This has brought our livelihood onto the roads. How can we educate our children without an income?” asked Sunitha, one of the workers.
The workers said that last Thursday over 40 employees of the Enforcement Directorate entered the SEZ premises and began conducting searches. The managers asked the workers to remain at their units and allowed them to leave by 5 pm. On Friday, when the workers arrived at the premises, they found that the gates were shut and they were not allowed in. Since then, they haven’t heard from the management.
Hyderabad Gems SEZ, also known as Rajiv Gem Park, is a 100 percent subsidiary of the Mehul Choksi-owned Gitanjali Group.
