Chennai: 42-year-old gets life term for murdering wife
Chennai: The Mahila court on Wednesday sentenced a 42-year-old person to undergo life imprisonment on a charge of murdering his wife two years ago.
Special public prosecutor Gowri Asokan said Selvam was living with his wife Amutha in Mylapore. Since the wedding 15 years ago, Selvam had been demanding dowry from her family. Soon after the marriage, her parents purchased an auto rickshaw for him. However, he had been demanding more dowry from Amutha’s family and harassing her. As he continued to fight with Amutha, her mother P. Vasantha, paid '5.50 lakh for taking a house on rent in R.A Puram and made them stay near her house.
On December 16, 2015, at 2 pm, Selvam developed heated altercation with Amutha. Learning this, Vasantha rushed to their house along with her son P. Srinivasan. They noticed Selvam attacking Amutha with knife profusely after abusing her.
Vasantha and Srinivasan attempted to protect Amutha. However, he threatened them and continued to attack Amutha. With the help of local residents, Amutha, who sustained multiple injuries, was rushed to a private hospital. Later, she was taken to Government general hospital, Royapettah. However, doctors declared that she was brought dead.
On a complaint, Abiramapuram police registered a case against Selvam under section 302 of IPC. On completion of the trial, the special judge, R.N. Manjula said the prosecution proved the case beyond reasonable doubt. Hence, the court sentenced Selvam to undergo imprisonment for life. It also imposed him a fine of '5,000 on him.
