Bengaluru: Four arrested for circulating photocopies of Rs 2,000

The cheating came to light when the accused circulated the photocopy of Rs 2,000 denomination at a wine store.

BENGALURU: Four people were arrested by the Jnanabhrathi police for allegedly circulating photocopies of newly introduced currency of Rs 2,000 denomination.

The police also seized eight such photocopies from the accused. Shashank M., 22, who works in a mobile phone shop, Madhukumar P, 19, an auto driver, both residents of Bhuvaneshwari Nagar, Nagaraj alias Akash, 27, who works with a mobile network service provider company, and Kiran Kumar, 21, a mechanic, were the arrested.

According to the police, the cheating came to light when the accused circulated the photocopy of the denomination at a wine store. On Sunday, the owner of Varalakshmi Wines, H.R. Nagesh, found that someone had given him a photocopy of the new note and bought alcohol.

After that, he was verifying all the new currency given by customers. Again on Monday evening, a customer gave a Rs 2,000 note to buy liquor. When the owner checked it, it turned out to be a photocopy.

“The owner brought the customer and the two photocopies of the currency to the police station and filed a complaint. Based on that Shashank was questioned. He revealed that he along with Madhu had got the photocopy of new currency done at a xerox shop belonging to other accused Kiran Kumar. They did it on December 15 night and had given it to Kiran and Nagaraj also. They were buying alcohol and other products using the photocopy of the currency and got change for it,” the police said.
