Chennai: More than three months after pulling off a successful gold heist with an insider’s assistance, the suspected mastermind, who is a serial offender, was arrested in Jaipur and 3 kg gold was recovered from his possession.

The arrested is identified as Dinesh who runs a network of robbers, while simultaneously working as a lorry driver. Dinesh was picked up from Jaipur by a special team led by Inspector George Miller Ponraj and was brought to the City. A Court here remanded Dinesh to judicial custody on Tuesday.

Two months ago, G. Deepak (21), employee of a jewellery-cum-pawn shop located in Somasundaram Street, Ayanavaram and his girlfriend were arrested from Jaipur, and nearly 1.5 kg gold recovered from them.

Deepak of Rajasthan, who was working in the shop owned by P.Gopaaram, vanished with 9 kg gold worth Rs 2.25 crore and Rs 2 lakh in cash from his work place. He was arrested by Jaipur police and was remanded to judicial custody here.

Based on a complaint from Goparam, special teams were formed and the Jaipur police were alerted to look out for the suspect. Police noted that six employees working in the shop were from Rajasthan and were residing in a portion of the owner’s house in the same building which housed the shop as well. There was only a single door inside the house that led to the shop and the key was placed near it. Only Deepak had inside information about this.

Dinesh took Deepak into his network and pulled the heist with his men. Deepak returned to Rajasthan to lie low until Jaipur Police eventually caught him and Dinesh escaped with 7.5 kg gold.
