Fitness boosters, cigarettes seized at Chennai airport
Chennai: Customs officials at the Chennai International Airport on Thursday seized Rs 35 lakh worth body building supplements and cigarettes.
Sources said based on specific information, Boom Murugan (36) and Mohamed Ali (37), both from Madurai and Hariharan (31) of Tiruchy, who had arrived from Dubai via Colombo by a Sri Lankan flight, were intercepted at the exit of the arrival hall, on suspicion of carrying gym and health supplements.
They appeared nervous, and on questioning they gave evasive answers. On a check of their baggage, all three were found to have concealed gym supplements among their personal effects.
The following were recovered - Myodrol HSP an androgenic steroid (1530 bottles), ‘BCCA’ Amino acid powder (48 pieces), Glutamine powder (47 pieces), curse gym workout powder (45 pieces), all valued at Rs 33 lakh. As many as 54 cartons of Davidoff white slim cigarettes (54 cartons) worth Rs 1 lakh were also recovered. Total goods worth Rs 34 lakh were seized under the Customs Act 1962 read with the Drugs and Cosmetics Act 2008 (as amended).
On enquiry, the passengers informed that the goods were handed over to them by their friend in Dubai under instructions to hand over the same to an unknown person waiting outside the airport, who would identify them.
They were taken outside the airport, but none approached them. Investigations are on.
