Kochi: Ghost rider' on molest spree held
Kochi: A bike-borne man who used to allegedly molest women while they walk through deserted stretches in early morning and late evening hours finally fell in police net on Thursday.
The accused was identified as Nikhil Babu (25), a resident of Padivattom near Palarivattom. According to cops, the accused used to target women who used to go to workplace or educational institutions alone at deserted stretches or bylanes.
“He used to follow the victims in his bike and molest and abuse them before fleeing. However, none could identify him as he wears helmet. Initially we too began to grope in the dark,” police said.
When more such complaints were lodged at different police stations including Elamakkara and Ernakulam North, the cops realised the issue was serious. A special squad led by Assistant Commissioner K. Laljy was formed to carry out ‘Operation Ghost Rider’.
“We’ve examined hundreds of CCTV cameras besides mobile towers in areas from where the attacks were reported in the last few months before finally managing to identify the accused,” they said.
He was arrested and produced before a local court which remanded him in judicial custody.
