Hyderabad: Woman stranded in Dubai

However, differences cropped up between the couple in 2010 resulting in a divorce and later the man died.

Hyderabad: One more case of a Hyderabadi woman married to a foreigner landing in trouble came to light on Saturday. The woman, Sabera Begum, who married a Dubai national 33 years ago, is now stranded in Dubai after her husband Abdul Aziz Abdul Rashid Khalifa Mohd Albalochi died in 2012.

Sabera married Albalochi in Hyderabad in 1984 and she went to Dubai along with her husband. She has two sons and a daughter who were born in Dubai.

However, differences cropped up between the couple in 2010 resulting in a divorce and later the man died. “The UAE citizenship of Sabera was cancelled after the divorce and as her husband had died there was no way to revoke it. So she submitted her Indian passport for renewal to the Indian embassy in 2012 but it has not yet been renewed,” said Sabera’s brother Mohammed Abdullah.

Since 2012, the family of Sabera has been representing her case to the ministry of external affairs, the Union home ministry and the state government.

“As her Indian citizenship was cancelled when she obtained an UAE passport, the Indian embassy is requesting a clearance from the Union home ministry,” said Mr Abdullah.

Sabera is now suffering from various health problems and wants to return to India. “We contacted Sushma Swaraj and sought her help. But nothing has happened so far. The state government issued a letter but it is not of much help,” Abdullah added.
