Bengaluru: Rowdy alleges harassment by police, commits suicide

Karthik was earlier booked in nine cases of attempt murder, assault and sexual harassment.

Bengaluru: Alleging police harassment, a 26-year-old rowdy committed suicide by consuming poison at his house in Bharati Nagar on Saturday night.

The deceased, Karthik, was a rowdy sheeter at Bharathi Nagar police station. Following the suicide, his father lodged a complaint at the Indiranagar police station against the Bharathinagar police for harassing his son in the name of interrogation.

The incident took place around 7.30 pm on Saturday. Karthik, who was reportedly depressed over the alleged harassment from police, consumed alcohol laced with poison.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he died around 10 pm.

Karthik was earlier booked in nine cases of attempt murder, assault and sexual harassment.

The police said that Karthik had to appear before court for his involvement in two serious cases reported at Commercial Street and Pulakeshinagar police stations.

He did not appear and was absconding for the last six months. The court had issued an arrest warrant against him.

"We were searching for him these days and had even questioned his family members on his whereabouts. But there was no harassment from our end," a senior police official said.

But Karthik's father said that his son was not involved in any criminal incidents since his marriage one-and-half-year ago.

He accused the Bharathinagar police of framing him in false cases and repeatedly summoning him and harassing him in the name of interrogation. Karthik, according to him, was depressed over police's behaviour and eventually committed suicide.

He also said that the police even raided his house during nights and took Karthik to police station on many occasions besides unnecessarily questioning the family members. “It was in fact to evade the harassment from police that my son remained untraceable and not for the reasons claimed by police,” he said in his complaint.
