Karimnagar: A 26-year-old girl committed suicide by hanging as she was dejected for allegedly being dumped by a youth, at Chinna Mulkanoor village of Chigurumamidi mandal on Friday night. Members of women’s organisations staged a dharna and rasta roko, seeking justice to her family and demanding action against the accused. Chigurumamidi police said that the deceased was Engandula Sujatha, an employee of a private hospital of Karimnagar and the daughter of a daily wage labourer of the village. The accused was Dubbaka Mahesh, a jobless youth of Sundaragiri village.
Sujatha resorted to the drastic step as she was upset when Mahesh started demanding dowry in order to marry her. She hanged herself when her family members were asleep at around 1 am. Her parents woke up only to find her body hanging to ceiling of their residence. Both Sujatha and Mahesh were in love from the past three years, stated the police. Upon learning this incident, members of women’s organisations rushed to the spot and started protests. They wanted cops to take stern action against Mahesh for forcing the girl to end life by demanding dowry.
They also sought compensation to kin of the deceased. Following a complaint lodged by parents of the girl, a case was registered against Mahesh. Investigations are on. The body was shifted to Husnabad government for post-mortem.
