Hyderabad: BSNL office hacked; asked $800 ransom
Hyderabad: BNSL Hyderabad office was affected by a ransomware attack.
The hackers demanded $800 in the form of bitcoins to decrypt data on the server in the attack that was detected at 12.30 pm on July 9.
The attack was detected on the BSNL intranet server that acts as a web server for the internal communication and information in the BSNL Hyderabad Telecom district.
“All the files in the server system were encrypted with ‘.crypt’ extension.
An HTML file was generated in each folder with a note to pay $800 in the form of bitcoins to release the data,” stated Mr B. Laxman, sub-divisional engineer (IT) at BSNL on July 13 in his complaint to the Hyderabad cyber crime police.
The 8GB RAM server and the 1 TB hard disk were affected despite having a firewall and antivirus.
Another user computer was also attacked by ransomware the next day.
The complainant requested the police to trace the hacker and recover the encrypted data.
Based on the complaint, the cyber crime police registered a case under section 66 of IT Act for the probe.
