3 held for assaulting police in Pollachi

A gang was creating public nuisance. Later when police confronted them, they attacked the policemen with knives.

POLLACHI: A group of three persons were booked with charges of attempt to murder and imprisoned after they stabbed police officials near Pollachi on Thursday night.

Police said that Chella Durai, 45, working as Q-branch inspector in Erode district also takes care of Coimbatore district as additional in-charge for Maoists-related cases. With SI Ruban, 39, head constable Mohana Sundaram, 43, and constable Palani Raj, he visited Pollachi in connection with a Maoist case and was returning to Erode on Thursday night.

While walking on the subway that connects the new bus stand and the old one, a gang of three members blocked their way and caused a public nuisance. When inspector Chella Durai reprimanded them, they abused him.

Following a heated quarrel the gang had attacked the policemen with knives, and the three policemen Chella Durai, Ruban and Mohana Sundaram were injured. Passersby came forward to help the police to catch the gang and the latter were handed over to Pollachi police.

The gang members were identified as Prem Kumar 25, Srinath, 24, from Pollachi and Vijay, 24, a Sri Lankan Tamil refuge staying at the Pooluvampatti camp in the suburbs of Coimbatore.

Further investigations revealed that Vijay and Prem are already involved in various criminal activities across the district. They were produced before a court and lodged at Coimbatore Central prison on Friday.
