Chennai: Van mows down 4-year-old girl to death
Chennai: A 4-year-old schoolgirl died after a speeding van hit her while she waiting for a bus, on Wednesday morning. The girl's mother and her two sisters escaped with mild injuries.
The deceased was identified as P. Pragathi (4), a UKG student in a private school in Ponneri, and a resident of Aladu village near Ponneri. According to police, the incident happened when Pragathi was waiting for a bus near her house along with her mother Kalpana and sisters Priyadharsini and Aishwarya.
Police said a staff van owned by a private company in Sholavaram lost control and rammed into Kalpana and her 3 children including Pragathi. Kalpana, Priyadharsini and Aishwarya escaped with mild injuries, Pragathi got trapped under the wheels and died on the spot, police added.
Meanwhile, angered by the death of the girl, residents attacked the van and damaged the windshield and window glasses. They also reportedly assaulted van driver Nandhakumar of Polur. On information, Ponneri police rushed to the spot and rescued the driver, before registering a case. The police also initiated an investigation.
