Tragedy strikes birthday bash, Karnataka MLA's son killed

Four others were also injured in the accident on the Bengaluru-Kolar Highway.

BENGALURU: A jolly drive by eight youngsters to celebrate a friend’s birthday turned tragic when the car toppled and the son of Congress MLA from the Chitradurga constituency died in Hoskote, on the outskirts of the city, on Sunday night. Four others were also injured in the accident on the Bengaluru-Kolar Highway.

The deceased, Abhishek, 23, son of MLA T. Raghumurthy, was in the final year of Bachelor of Computer Application in Dayananda Sagar College in Kumaraswamy Layout. He was staying with his friends at a house in Sadashivanagar. The four injured are identified as Dhrupad, Sumukh, Pooja and Anu.

All the eight students were classmates and it was Pooja’s birthday on Monday. The friends decided to party and headed towards Cafe Coffee Day near Narasapura in Kolar district in two cars. Abhishek, Dhrupad, Sumukh, Pooja and Anu were travelling in a Ford Fiesta (KA-41-M-1469), while the other three were following in another car.

“Dhrupad, who was driving, was reportedly speeding. While passing through Attur Gate near Hoskote around 10.50 pm, Dhrupad saw a dog’s carcass on the road, and tried to avoid it. But he lost control and the car toppled after hitting a roadside drain. All the five occupants in the car, including Abhishek, who was sitting next to the driver, were injured. The three other friends in the other car rushed them to a nearby hospital, where Abhishek, who had sustained critical head injuries and multiple fractures, was declared brought dead. The other injured were treated for fractures and minor injuries. The four are out of danger and are recovering at a private hospital in Bengaluru,” the police said.

The MLA’s family was informed and they landed in the city early on Monday morning. A postmortem was conducted at the Hoskote Government Hospital and the body was handed over to the family members. It is said that Abhishek was the only son of Mr Raghumurthy. The Hoskote police have booked Dhrupad under Section 304A (causing death by negligence) and other sections of the IPC.
