Police arrested five members of the gang and seized 1.08 kg of gold jewellery worth Rs 30 lakh.

Hyderabad: A six-member interstate attention diversion gang stole around a kg of gold jewellery in the past two years from city houses. The gang, involved in 25 cases, pretended to polish jewellery and other valuables and after gaining the confidence of the victims, decamped with valuables. Police arrested five members of the gang and seized 1.08 kg gold jewellery worth Rs 30 lakh, three bikes and five mobile phones.

Police said they received a complaint from a housewife whose 11.5 tola gold jewellery was stolen by two men who claimed to be Ujala Shine agents and said they had come for a product launch. They initially, cleaned a copper object with a sample powder and later cleaned silver articles. Seeing this, the housewife’s daughter gave them her silver anklets, which they cleaned. Later, they showed them a chemical to clean gold ornaments. “They boiled turmeric powder in a bowl, took 11.5 tola gold jewellery from the victims and put them in the boiling water. They asked for more turmeric powder to mix in the water and after adding it they told them to check the jewellery after 10 minutes and left. When the victims checked the bowl after 10 minutes, the jewellery was missing,” east zone DCP Dr V. Ravinder said, adding that the gang operates in teams of two.

They realised that they were cheated and approached the police. Police found an interstate gang was involved and nabbed Rajeeth Sah and Kaneya Prasad from their hideout in Mangalhat. Based on their confession, a team was sent to Bihar from where Bambam Sah and Ajay Mandal were picked up. Later, one Sunil Kumar was nabbed from Mangalhat. One Mukesh Kumar is absconding.
