Kundara rape case: Grandfather remanded in two weeks judicial custody

The accused was allegedly involved in similar crimes, including unnatural sex, which will also be charged against him.

KOLLAM: Victor Daniel, the grandfather of the 10-year-old girl in Kundara, who was arrested on Sunday on the charge of raping her, was remanded in judicial custody for two weeks by the first class judicial court here on Monday. The police had interrogated him for five days and collected statements from his wife, daughter and grand-daughter. The grandmother said he had been abusing the girl for the last one year. A tense situation prevailed in the area when the people tried to assault Victor Daniel who was taken by the probe team to his house where he raped the girl, who committed suicide on January 15, to collect evidence.

The accused was allegedly involved in similar crimes, including unnatural sex, which will also be charged against him. The girl's father claimed that the grandfather was involved in the murder of the girl. He alleges that the culprit had hatched a plot to trap him in the case. "On the day of the murder itself, I had given statements against the grandfather. My daughter was forced to write the suicide note by the culprit. She doesn't know the old style of letters found in the note. The grandfather confessed to the crime fearing the lie-detection test. More people will be trapped if a lie-detection test is conducted," he said.

The accused had invited him to the house on the day the girl was found dead. "He wanted to trap me for the murder. She would not have died if she was given psychological counselling," he added. The girl was found hanging from the window of her house at Nanthirikkal, Kundara. A suicide note recovered from near the body stated that she was ending her life as she "lacked peace" at her home.
