Coimbatore: Fake intelligence official nabbed

Locals call cops on seeing man wielding an airgun.

Coimbatore: Police on Tuesday evening nabbed a 48-year-old man who impersonated himself as an undercover agent ifor RAW and seized an air gun from him near Thondamuthoor in the suburbs of the city.

According to police, people noticed a man roaming around with an air gun near a departmental store close to the Thondamuthoor – Muthu Mariamman temple in the suburbs of the city on Tuesday evening.

As his behaviour was suspicious, people informed the Thondamuthoor police personnel. Police rushed to the spot and took the accused to the Thondamuthoor police station.

During preliminary investigations, the accused said he was Vijaya Raman Iyer (48), a native of Srirangam, Trichy.

He claimed himself to be an undercover agent working for an external intelligence agency (RAW). Police also seized an air gun and a few ID cards from Vijaya Raman.

He was taken to the Vadavalli police station, where he told police that he had been residing in Mumbai for a long time, and had come down to here just three years back, and was presently living with his mother, since his wife had left him.

Officials from the Central Investigation Wing (Chennai office) started an enquiry on Wednesday. They also confirmed that the ID cards seized from Vijaya Raman were fakes.

Police are continuing investigations with Vijaya Raman's mother, and are also trying to figure out facts regarding the air gun that the accused had in his possession.
