Man ends life in Cherlapally jail
Hyderabad: A young remand prisoner committed suicide in Cherlapally jail on Friday evening. A. Deepak, 21, who was remanded by a criminal court in Hyderabad for alleged theft, hanged himself from a tree inside the jail using a blanket. Deepak, a resident of Netaji Nagar in Kapra, was extremely depressed after he was jailed, police said. The police did not find any suicide letter. So they suspect that depression must have pushed him to suicide.
Jail officials said that Deepak was found hanging on Friday evening by jail guards. Though they cut him loose and rushed him to hospital he was declared dead. “Prisoners were outside their barracks in the evening. Deepak took a bed sheet with him, made a noose, climbed a tree and hanged himself by jumping from the tree,” said a Cherlapally jail official. Guards were not present at the time of the incident. Other prisoners alerted them about the death.
Sources said that Deepak was not provided any psychiatric help by the jail authorities though officials had noticed his depression. According to officials, Deepak was arrested by Kushaiguda police in February for several petty thefts. “He was accused in four theft cases. He was remanded to judicial custody soon after his arrest. The court extended his remand as investigation was going on,” said Kushaiguda inspector N. Venkat Ramana.
Police said that it was Deepak's first stay in jail and he was not able to cope with it. “May be he was too depressed that he did not want to live anymore. That may be the reason for his suicide. But, we are still investigating the other causes,” said a police official. Police launched a probe into Deepak’s death and booked a case following a complaint from jail authorities.
